Yeah its me again...

this problem started after you guys helped me with crypt3.dll problem back in January. I've been hoping it would clear itself.

Combofix finally destroyed crypt3.dll but now my internet connection is dropped randomly but consitently after the fix but not before.

I am running xppro on a amd xp2600.

actually I havent been ignoring it but trying find a patter but I cant. I can browse for hours with no problems but then I just lose my connection on next page connect. Sometimes its within the same site other times its chasing a link...sometimes it hours and others 1/2 hour.

I repaired XPpro, reloaded IE7, reset all my protocols, reset IE preferences to default (2X) but nothing has worked.

I have not tried anything with SOCKS yet...

the only thing I know to do is reboot to restore IE....I dont have firefox on this system (I have 2 computers that you have helped me with now) so I dont know if that would be affected. I can install it if you think it will help.


BTW I was hopeful the Steelers would win the SuperBowl this year right up until Eli scored with :35 on the clock...then I knew we had no chance ..... I never give up my team.....

WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components.

Follow the instructions in this article: WinSock Fix Techniques.

If that doesn't work, run WinSock2Fix.
When you run it, click on ReG-Backup button first to backup the registry, and then click on the Fix button.

Neither of those worked.

OK I went back and ran it all again to get you details.


Method 1)
netsh winsock repair - dos popped up then disappeared
Installed support tools - dos popped up then disappered "netdiag /test:winsock"

Method 2)

Msinfo32, expanded as directed.
I have 25 entries... those listed plus additional 8 entries under MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
(I have "MSAFD nwlnkipx [IPX] entries")


Winsox2 fix destroyed my registry and I had to go back to jan 13th setpoint. (original try, no second attempt)
I received errors from the application when it was doing a backup (should have been a hint)

I have SP2 installed...

I am going to try the "without SP2" section?

I have no problems deleting registry entries or reinstalling my protocals


OK got through that OK...I'll let you know if it worked or not...hopefully in the next hour or so

One thing I noticed is the tab shows Connnecting... when ever I lose my connection but shows the website name if I am going to get a 404 error... I assume it's the difference between having a connection and not..

It did not work....

Try this method of manually restoring the Internet connection After Using ComboFix, when you no longer have any access to your Internet connection.

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on the Settings menu option.
3. Click on the Control Panel option.
4. When the Control Panel opens, double-click on the Network Connections icon. If your Control Panel is set to Category View, then double-click on Network and Internet Connections and then click on Network Connections at the bottom.
5. You will now see a list of available network connections. Right-click on the connection for your Wireless or Lan adapter and right-click on it.
6. Click on the Repair menu option.
7. Reboot your computer.

If no joy:

Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced Tab/ Reset Button.
This will reset any changed settings.

You might also try the following option:
Tools/ Internet Options/ Connections Tab.
Click on Lan Settings Button.
Check Automatically Detect Settings.
Click Okay twice.

Why not try buying a new router? That wil do. Or maybe your ISP's congested. Just try resetting or buying a new router.

Apologize for not getting back to you sooner jpd9930, but I haven't been spending much time on the board the past little while.

Why don't you try downloading the latest version of Firefox and see if you continue to lose internet connection.

If you do, it might be time to call your ISP and explain to them, whats happening.

my turn to be slow to respond...I reloaded firefox but it has all my old settings...I guess their uninstall doesnt remove registry entries and the like....

I dont think its my ISP as I have no problem with 3 other computers...


can you point in the direction of Super MS freaks? I think I need somone whos goal is to know everything there is about IE...
