Best Way To Upgrade VISTA 32 to VISTA 64

Hi All:
New build is running great. Have VISTA 32 and 4 GB of RAM. Only recignizes 2.816GB. I now realize that it's the limitations of V32. Called MS. They couldn't (wouldn't) help me other than to suggest that I buy V64, back up my stuff, and load V64. My version od V32 is the OEM Builder's pack. Is there an option to upgrade other than buying the V64 (another $100+)? Will there be some sort of patch down the road that will turn on the V32 so that it will recognize the 4GB I have installed? Also what are the steps involved (don't want to lose what files/programs I have)? Any input appreciated.TIA

The memory limitation is built into 32 bit OS's - so you'll never be able to get the OS to recognize all 4 gB. FWIW - my 32 bit Vista system would recognize 3.26 gB of the RAM when it was running.

Since you have an 32 bit OEM copy of Vista, it's unlikely that you'd have access to the 64 bit version. Most Vista installations are determined (in part) by the product key - so if you don't have a product key for a 64 bit version you'll have to purchase one.

FWIW - My 64 bit Vista recognizes all 4 gB of RAM - but I didn't notice a great deal of improvement when I switched to 64 bit.

In order to go from Vista 32 to 64, you pretty much have to wipe out the ol' 32-bit and install the 64-bit. This is a fresh install.

I would think you would need a quad core using some very heavy duty applications to get that extra ram in use from going to 64 bit from 32 bit

Have you considered using the Vista Alternate Media program to get the 64-bit DVD? I'm not sure if it works with OEM editions though. You put in your product key and select 64-bit media, all you pay is shipping from Microsoft. Here's a link: Windows Vista Alternate Media

A great idea, and I tried it. The response was "No Offer Found." I guess that confirms that OEM System builder packs can't be upgraded. Think I'll live with it the way it is. Running OK. Just a shame not to use all that RAM. Thanks again for your help.
