Let's see if you can open a Control Panel applet with a command.

Go to Start --> Run, and type cmd in the Open box, then click OK

A DOS windows will open.

Type control appwiz.cpl (there is a space between control and appwiz.cpl). This should open the Add or Remove Programs Windows. Did it open the window ?

No, I'm sorry. I cannot help you. I don't know what to look for. Did you try Microsoft AntiSpyware ? Or Microsoft support ?

Ok, thanks for all your help. My PC is much healthier and hopefully protected now. I am baffled with this control panel stuff, maybe it is a settings. I don't know. I can work around it and all the other stuff seems to be working. Many thanks again.
