Something strange is going on. Nearly every page that I try to call up in Bleeping Computer this evening is causing my AV alert to go off saying that it found a sign of "VBS: Malware-gen" on the page. In fact, in order to type this and post, I had to turn off my standard shield.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is something on the website, or has my AV gone paranoid?

this is a false positive. Many AV products use file names / paths for their virus signatures and if you visit the hijackthis forum and look at logs, it could happen that your AV thinks you are infected with a file shown in the logs wink.gif

I'm an Avast user and I don't have this problem. And I have all my updates installed.

These are the feelings I wanted to arouse in the players with Aerith's death relatively early in the game. Feelings of reality and not Hollywood." - Yoshinori Kitase

Orange Blossom -

I'd suggest downloading the current version of Avast!,

uninstalling the one you have (even if it is the same version),

and then installing the current version and let it update itself.

Then see if you still are having the problem.

Thanks to all the replies. Whatever was going on seems to have sorted itself out. It hasn't done it this morning.

It was really strange; last night I couldn't even call up the forum index page, this page, the forum games page, and finally ANY BC page without the AV going off. I checked my AV settings, and they were what they always were, set to normal. Then it decided to do the same thing, exact same infection alert, when I was navigating to the login page for E-bay, which it also hadn't done before. I cleared my cache, history etc. to see if that would solve the problem - no dice. Still doing it. I finally decided to run a complete scan, while disconnected from the internet, to see what would happen. The AV flagged three files on my desktop with the exact same infection alert - files that I've had on the computer for close to a year, haven't altered, hadn't opened for several months and which Avast never flagged before last night. They were, however, saved web-pages using Firefox. I created a new folder for the files in question, and transferred all the files, flagged and unflagged, from the old folder to the new one. I just now scanned that folder and no alerts. Note: the three flagged files were the only saved web pages. All the others were other file types.

Conclusion: Avast was possessed last night and decided it didn't like any Firefox pages. Couldn't tell you about IE though because I didn't open that browser.

It's possible that those old Ff pages that you saved contained "something" that the newer definitions of the AV just alerted on? IDK. Sure appears to be false alerts.
