Greetings from Singapore. I've been having problem with my PC the past 3 days. It started out as a warning from Norton AV that trojan.startpage has infected my computer. NAV couldn't delete it. My homepage functions were still ok, no about:blank on homepage yet. Next day, started getting trojan.startpage.16.BD virus detections. Couldn't find any reference of the said trojan on NAV site. Searched internet till found YOU.... Pls help. Thanks |

Hi. Please download and install the program Registrar Lite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/reglite Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu. Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs And press enter. You will now be presented with new information in the bottom right and left sections and on the right section, the name AppInit_DLLs should be highlighted. Double-click on the AppInit_DLLs entry and copy and paste the text found in the value field in your next reply to this post. -------------------- Lawrence

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:
Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. Download and run this program: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxAgentB.exe and tell me what it finds. Then post a new HJT log. -------------------- Lawrence

Nothing found by FxAgentB.exe. I disabled an entry in msconfig which is running the se.dll file. Now enabled again as requested. Thanks for helping a lost soul!

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps: Step 1:Delete Temp Files To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button. This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files. Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted. Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following: Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: How to see hidden files in Windows Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://D:\DOCUME~1\Glen\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://D:\DOCUME~1\Glen\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank O2 - BHO: (no name) - {57F6E018-FE6D-4EB7-878C-FCEA8CDC98CF} - D:\WINDOWS\System32\acdi.dll O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe O18 - Filter: text/html - {C8F8E56A-BC50-4FA7-B95A-09C59F355BD5} - D:\WINDOWS\System32\acdi.dll O18 - Filter: text/plain - {C8F8E56A-BC50-4FA7-B95A-09C59F355BD5} - D:\WINDOWS\System32\acdi.dll Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist) D:\WINDOWS\System32\acdi.dll Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log. -------------------- Lawrence

Hi,
When I boot up in Safe mode, there's Admin mode, mine and my wife's profile. I logged on as Admin and tried to perform the deletion of temp files but none seen. So I logged on as myself and deleted temp files under my profile. Then, when attempting to delete D:\Windows\System32\acdi.dll, it said "Access denied". I re-logon as Admin and managed to delete the said file. Here's the log again. Pls advise if I've done the correct steps. Thanks a lot. Did another scan with HJT after performing the instructions while as Admin in Safe mode. Still getting occassional pop-up ads but homepage seems ok. Norton AV still detects trojan.startpage but can't delete.
