Okay... with Linux/Unix I am GREEN. I just picked up an old server and I want to play! Can Linux act as server software? ( this may be a stupid question... but here, I don't have a clue) I would like to load it on my older server and connect both a Linux and XP computer. Can that happen?

Any version of Linux work better than others for this project?

I'm looking forward to finally learning Linux.

Version of linux will be debatable. Fedora is the old redhat and may be good as a first linux test. TO answer youre question about it acting as a server, the answer is yes. You will need to configure samba.

Tiny Sofa is the simplest server OS to install...15 minutes to a running server.
http://tinysofa.org
Based on Trustix (which was built from SELinux) it is one of the most secure Linux server OS's right out of the box...good luck.
