Dvd Stopped Working

Just recently, my DVD drive stopped reading discs (any disc; DVD or otherwise). However, the drive is still visible in My Computer, so I know it is still installed; it just doesn't want to read any disc.
Device manager tells me that the drive is working fine.
OS: Windows XP
Drive: Sony DVD-ROM DDU1612
Hopefully you guys are able to help. Otherwise, will I need a new drive?

especially if you haven't installed any strange burning software like roxio or easy cd
No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

When you make a copy of, or try to play a copy of, copy righted material there is a small program that will not allow your drive to read disc ever again.
I see the same symptoms all of the time from people who just played a copy they got from a friend.
If this does apply to you, buy a new drive.

that would be a drm rootkit and hasn't happened yet
after sony's infamous adventure with audio cd's I doubt that it will ever happen, all those people picketing outside music stores was too much a public backlash?
sounds like an urban legend to me
If it was true we would have heard about it over at digital digest where I moderate?
what's this so called program?

It doesn't see them as anything. The drive shows up in My Computer, but if you try to open/explore it, it says something to the effect of "please insert disc", as if there is no disc inserted.

And I am not sure how it is done but then you would get an error code saying could not load drivers.
Have you tried cleaning the lens? If the lens is dirty the drive will not read a disc.
For desk tops this is easy as you just use a cleaning disc, laptops are harder.
For a laptop you can put a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip and gently rub the lens a few times. (the lens is the little glass or plastic bubble next to the center where the disk sets).
Give this a try, hopefully it will work, if not your drive may have died. (does happen all of a sudden).

If anything is wrong with any drive, it should be reflected in EV (if all is working well).
In particular, you want to look for controller errors anything referencing a drive/disk.

Device manager Will give an error code if the drivers are current, but will not load.
My purpose is to gather all the information that I can so that I may give you a proper fix.
I must apologize for hamluis asking you to use event viewer with out providing instructions on how to use it, or a link to a site that gives instruction.
Below are basic instructions on how to use event viewer followed by a link to give you more information.

Oh, and BTW, I'm yet to by a cleaning disc, so if all else fails, I'll try that.
