Hi, I made this build

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...itle=KJSGrandpa

Now when I use the computer its slow and about 5-1 min after its start it locks up and you cant do anything, no CNTL ALT DEL Nothing

Mouse laser is still on but it wont move.

is this some kind of hardware issue or is something DOA? whats wrong why would it freeze up after using it for a few min.

Times it has frozen what I have been doing:

Clicking on the sound Icon from the Notification Area
During Windows Updates
Moving the mouse around in Circles on the Desktop.
Doing Nothing

Any Ideas???

Thanks

Did you use thermal compound or pad when attaching the heatsink to the CPU? The best thing to do is to remove everything from the case and run it on the table top (on top of some cardboard) Start with minimum memory and devices attached. Then add them back one at a time

No, the LGA 775 Intel Doul core does not need thermal compound or a pad. It comes with the included heatsink, you just put it into place.

Ill try the table top computer idea. thanks

any other ideas would help

Are you sure that it doesn't need any thermal paste/pad? If this is the case its the first processor I can think of since the old P2s
The specs say that a heatsink is included, but without the paste to connect the two together it will overheat.

go directly into bios and see what temp is reported for the cpu, it should start around 40C at most and only climb a few degrees in bios

if it reaches 60C then you don't even have a thermal pad under the HSF

who told you you didn't need thermal paste?

the fan is spinning?

thermal pads ship with a plastic strip, if it isn't removed, you'll fry the cpu

I took off the Heat sink it has Pasty stuff, I guess I didnt see it. Its there and when you install it, it reacts and works.

I looked at ECS website and it says my processor is only supported if I update my Bios,

This is the page I found

http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Products/...=44&LanID=9

Any one know how to update a bios?

If the 4 threads you have started in the last 2 days are about the same motherboard I would return it and buy something more reliable than an ecs entry level one, was this a refurb?

sneaky,
like you said there

QUOTE
Just a few things you listed an ECS MB there not a verry solid manufacture.

I quit using them a few years ago, had too many failures, many worked ok for a year or so, many died sooner

he should be able to spot the bios version at bootup and tell if the bios is the problem
