QUOTE(dc3 @ Nov 4 2007, 11:00 PM) *
Go to the device manager and uninstall the modem and reboot the computer, the modem should then be recognized as new hardware and the installation wizard will take you through the process and try to find the appropriate driver/s for it. If this is a custom build with something like a US Robotics 57k modem you may need a little more information to make it work.

It alway helps if you provide the make and model of the computer so that we are all on the same page.

Problem is I have just installed a new Hard drive, it is a singular HD and its in a Compaq Presario 4403, The only disc I have for WXP are the ones it came with and they restore disk (SP1), if anyone is familiar with Compaq Presario there are 3 Disk

Compaq Restore Plus . . . . . . Start with this disk

Compaq Operating System CD MSWXPH

Restore Supplemental Software . . . . . Additional Applications, . . (I did not use this one Quikens, Disneyland, etc.)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

It also states on the OS CD, For the latest software and Drivers Visit compaq etc.

Problem is I have used these before and had no problems, I am wondering at this point if there is something on that 3rd disc ?

I am wanting to know as advice in the above quote, to uninstall the modem and reboot, am I going to find the original set up if it can not re-install automatically ?

since I am having modem problems, I set up the dial connection, it hangs after carpserv needs to close mesg., then I need to restart and the computer hangs because the modem wont close trying to connect, etc.

I need to go on line to upgrade to SP@ since I can not get the WXPSP2 CD to work, it sits there and spins.

This computer I am using is a CP 5300US, I believe the modem was automatically updated when I upgraded to SP2, it is a

PCTel Platinum V.92 Modem

The PC 4403 US, OS WXPSP1, that is the problem, its modem is a ;

Conextant HSFI V90 V 92 56K PCI Modem

If there is an expert out there I have a ModemLog, .

I have found that the PCI Device drivers are not installed !

Any comments are welcome !

I have decided to reinstall SP1, so, I'll check back but don't bother yourself !

You can download the modem driver from here.

OK, what you need to do is when you run the CD's through the system, use ALL disc's provided by the manufacture. Next thing, you really need Windows XP Service Pack 2 to fix bugs within windows.

Post the modem log and then other members can post more idea's for you.

Also, your modem could be (not saying it is) faulty. If you think it's a faulty piece of hardware, take it into the shop that sold it to you and found out what they can do for you.

OK, I just reinstalled SP1 and I'm having the same problem, will try to get a log back again.

About that driver fixing this modem is my best bet for ugrading to SP2 so, can I d/l it and then upload it to this other computer ?

I have it where it will connect, . .but I am still having problems,

It won't disconnect if I click disconnect, it is always non responsive, hangs and will not close unless I end now, same with IE program

I can not get the internet to work it won't load the first page, it says that it is attempting to find yahoo buttons, this is IE,

when I go to tools and click Windows updates, it will not load the page, it just hangs ?

Will not close from restart needs to be manually shut down, hangs at saving your settings

You should install Service Pack 2. You can download it from here.

Did you install the modem driver (refer to my post #2)?

The driver has been installed.

I know that it can get me connected after restart I have not tried all of its capabilities yet like disconnect and connect again, previously it would not do that.

At this time I am having hang issues with the internet connection as I can not get connected, it hangs on the connection attempt, I need to get to windows to update sp2, . . .

I am not sure if a video adapter can solve this , I have just set the Internet options to default and am going to try that and so on, something tells me that something is up though, since, . . My dial up connection on this computer, (5300US) has been not getting connected because the user name gets messed up, this happens when I dial in using the other computer (4403 US) < this is the computer I am not able to get on line with.

Did updating the driver solve the carpserv.exe problems?

No, I am still having problems with it, I believe that I reinstalled the V.9 56 Platinum, but I can dial up but believe that I am having problems with the PCI.

In troubleshooting this issue;

The modem Virtual Technician cannot detect modem.

If you have an internal modem, please make sure that the modem is inserted properly into your PCI slot. If you have an external modem, try using a different serial or USB port.

My modem is a dial up line that conncets to the rear outside lower tower.

The carpserv is still messg. me and has to close, I really don't know what closes but I do not have any sound when dialing, the speakers are on, and working, I can judge this by the static when the volume is up per dial on speakers, but there are no other computer sounds etc.

If there is a PCI problem it may account for all the hangs I am getting, i.e., ISP dialer, does dial once is a mistake is made like my other computer is connected and it can not get a dial tone, it will not dial again until I restart.

There is another sound, audio driver issue but I am going to need to track it back, it has slipped my mind for now !

Yeah I am having major hangs problems with this, . .
BTW Budapest,
Do you recall the Java update you turned me on to ?

You should then check in Add or Remove Programs. If there are any other Javas besides Java邃「 6 Update 3 remove them.

Old versions of Java have vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

I went there on said computer it has changed to update 4, but when I went to D/L it gave me timed out it did that several times, I don't know if that is part of the problem ?

But, is this isn't an automatic update is it it used to be update 3 ?

Do you have any sound at all on your computer?

Check your devices in Device Manager (Start > Run > type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter). Look for any "! ", "?" or "X" symbols, particularly next to sound devices.

I wouldn't worry about the Java thing for now. There seems to be a bit of confusion at their end as to which is the latest update. It says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 but if you click on the ReleaseNotes it says Update 3 is the current version.
