Thanks for the new info.
Question - mvps file is used on the Android machines, AdFree application. But they also use pg1.yoyo.org list making the file >900kb almost double what I use on Windows. Is that good? bad? indifferent?

tos226,
First, I don't use AdFree, had to google it. Something doesn't seem right about a 900kb hosts file. The MVPS hosts file for January 2012 is 594kb. On this windows laptop I'm on right now, I have three hosts files:MVPS,hphosts(ads and tracking)and pg1.yoyo.org and the combined hosts file size is 768kb. Maybe you've got duplicates, in my quick googling I did not see anything about this app deleting duplicates just that it pulled from two sources: MVPS and pg1.yoyo.org. Maybe you know otherwise. If the app is just combining two hosts files and not deleting duplicates that could account for the large size.

I'm so glad I posted here and that you answered!
My HOSTS on Windows is just coming close to 600kb, so that 900kb surprised me.
Since you're familiar with yoyo, and use it, then I think it gotta be the duplicates. Yikes.
I'm not sure how to go about checking. I probably should visit that yoyo site and look.
OR
throw the current file into excel, sort, and see duplicates. Something like that. I probably can't rewrite it myself due to permissions.
OR
Maybe I'll contact the developer
OR
even better idea - do you think siljaline might start making one for Android the way it should be done? :)

Edited: There are NO DUPLICATES in the file provided by AdFree.

tos226,
Ignore what follows if you've solved why the android AdFree hosts file is 900kb. I'd be curious to know what you discovered if you've solved it.
If there are no duplicates in the Adfree hosts file, then does the developer of the android AdFree app pre-load sites in the hosts file in addition to drawing from the MVPS hosts file of Consumer Security MVP Mike Burgess and Peter Lowe's ad server list at pgl.yoyo.org.

Or alternatively do you have another android app running that is also writing to the hosts file.

Or have you posted in an android forum to see if you can find somebody else who runs the AdFree app and can compare file size.

Or have you posted the issue to the app developer.

Hi tork
Here's the start of the 31000+ lines. It looks like just the two sources.
