I have a windows 2000. after it turns on and logs in, it takes forever(several minutes) for the desktop and the shortcuts to show up. I looked at the task manager during this time and saw ngen.exe hogging up all the space. What is it, and how can I speed up the startup?

Hi trashcan (your name makes me giggle),

I googled ngen.exe and found some interesting info about this file, which seems to be operating on your computer in a way that appears to be almost (but not necessarily) contradictory to its intent of saving you time:

At Microsoft: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6...wcf(VS.80).aspx

At Uniblue: http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/ngen

At file.net (re the possibility of its being malware): http://www.file.net/process/ngen.exe.html

The full Google search

What you ultimately need to do about it is beyond my scope of expertise, but I thought this info might be a good place for you to start.

Hope this helps a bit.

it might be useful to know what your antivirus protection is and other protection and when you last updated it and ran a full scan?

Actually, I took a look at the process manager again while the desktop was not loading, and it appeared that nothing was running. explorer.exe, the thing that controls the desktop, was not running until a few minutes later. Is it possible some files are corrupted or something? I already did a virus and malware scan.
