About a month after I got an HP Pavilion laptop running Windows Vista it started making periodic sounds. 2 or 3 times a day the computer announces "I am French". I can't figure out any keystrokes or other activity that would generate it. It also makes a couple of nonsense sounds (like vroom) with less frequency.

It doesn't seem to be causing any problems on the computer and endless virus and other mal-ware searches don't pick up anything but I worry that something is burried in there. The laptop is about 5 months old.

Has anyone run into something similar or have suggestions on where to look? I really REALLY don't want to reformat the drive and re-install the operation system.

thank you.

It would be easiest to take it to a shop to figure out what's doing it - but you can use this free program to figure it out also: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/Autoruns.mspx

If you don't recognize anything in particular, post the results here and we'll have a look at it.

BTW - the avatar pic is a camel as it looks back at me while I'm in the saddle (and he wasn't happy!)
