I purchase an external hard drive, Seagate 250 GB external hard drive. My computer recognizes it and I believe that was a good sign. I backed up my files on the drive. Now i'm expecting my computer to work faster but its not. The space on my computer hasn't decreased. Should i now delete the file off my computer because i have the back up files? The purpose of buying the external drive was to make my computer work faster. Did i purchase the correct thing? Someone please help me.

Removing files from your computer will not increase the computer speed significantly unless the HDD was completely full. You would have probably benefited more from more memory. What kind of computer do you have and how much memory is installed?

I have a Dell computer Dell Dimension DIM 3000 Pentium 2.80GHz 2.79 GHz, 256 MB of RAM

I just bought this hard drive, it's not too late to take it back. What do you suggest?

What version of windows are you using?

EDIT: If you are using Windows xp. You should max out the computer to 2 gigs of DDR 400 ram. Also go into my computer and right click on you C drive and post how much free space is left. You may need the external drive if your main drive is full but it wont speed up the computer.

How do you max out the computer to 2 gigs?
I have 65.3GB used and 6.08 Free Space = 71.4GB.
So external drive purpose is merely for just back up? Damn, I need speed and the computer keeps crashing because of lack of space. What should I do to improve this issue?

Buy additional MEMORY not HDD space. If you move the files to your external drive and not copy them it will increase the available space on your computer. These memory modules are compatible with your computer. You can even move programs to the external hdd but you will have to uninstall them then re-install them choosing the external drive as the directory this will further increase the amount of space on your internal drive. Buying the drive was a good choice since your internal one is completely full.

it's a pretty complicated memory scenario, I would go for 2 512 meg sticks depending upon price

even adding another 256 would help a lot

I would use everest home free to see what's actually in the computer tho(cpu/fsb etc)

when the hard drive filled up windows ran out of space for swap file/virtual memory and with only 256 megs of ram, that's sudden death, not to even mention disk fragmentation?
