I am backing up a Vista for first time....this is the first time I've done it,,,and the reason why I want a backup is because my wireless keyboard and mousy refuse to cooperate, I tried with HP tech support and we deleted all the USB drivers and didn't change the situation,as a result their thinking is restore to original state...well I don't want install the software all over again....I created a partition and backup there....however my question is: If I restore and retrieve from the created partition would that bring the problem back?

It might and it might not - it all depends on where the error is located and what you're backing up. Unfortunately, if you backup to this other drive and restore the system - you won't be able to just copy the software over and expect it to work. You cannot easily backup program files due to their registry entries, the scattered way that programs are installed all over the hard drive, and the security descriptors that Windows assigns to them.
