I currently am using windows media player 11 with the Firefox plugin and the latest version of Firefox. When I try to open a video in the web browser (streaming), the player status goes straight from "connecting" to "ready" when autoplay kicks in. When I try to manually start the video, the same thing happens. It will not play. I do not get an error message on my screen, but when I right clicked and looked at "error details", this is what i got: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:"). In general, I have noticed that this happens most often with asx and mms files. In addition, the same thing happens in IE7 and the latest Opera browser. I am using the latest version of Firefox with all necessary updates.

thanks for your help

Problem fixed by going to start>run> %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Media and changing 10.0 to 10.0.bak and 11.0 to 11.0.bak
thanks
