which video card is better for gaming the 512mb EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS , or the 256mb ATI Radeon HD 3850 and why?

The 3850 no doubt is better. Here's some benchmarks to prove it: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_200...8&chart=318

Reasons why its better:

256-bit memory interface

Much newer= newer technology thats better.

Support for directX10.1 (when it comes out)

Theres a bunch of other reasons (more technical), but just look through some of those benchmarks comparing the two, and you'll see the 3850 is much better.
