SNOPES CONFIRMED WORM WARNING!! Extremely important VIRUS ALERT!!/GP
Importance: High

http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/zafi.asp

You should be alert during the next days:
Do not open any message with an attached file called "Merry Christmas"
regardless of who sent it, It is a virus that opens as an Open Log Fire
and will burn the whole hard disc in your computer.

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address
in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all
your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to
receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called "Merry Christmas", though sent by a friend, do
not open it and shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst
virus announced, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most
destructive virus ever.

This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair
yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector
of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.
When you don't have to worry about your computer anymore, you can start
living again !

I think your confusing the information about the Zafi.D worm discovered by McAfee and the hoax.

Did you read the part in your link that says?

Quote

The Zafi.D worm now poses little or no threat...The Zafi.D "Merry Christmas" warnings...should not be confused with the 2007 "Merry Christmas" variant of the Invitation (or Olympic Torch) hoax.

Your information warning under the snopes.com link is a quote from the second example in Invitation/Olympic Torch Virus Hoax

You should be alert during the next days:
Do not open any message with an attached file called "Merry Christmas"
regardless of who sent it...This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept

Also see Merry Christmas Virus Hoax.

The Zafi.D worm will harvest email addresses and stores them in files in the system32 folder. It does not destroy the zero sector of the hard disc.

However, folks should always use common sense and be careful about opening email attachments or clicking on links from unknown or suspect sources.

Many of us have learned the hard way to double check E-mails concerning a virus. More often than not, the problem is spurious or a hoax, and one ends up, with the best of intentions, passing it on.
Cheers,
John
