I am running Excel 2003 on an XP Home operating system. When I open, edit or save certain (usually more complex) workbooks, the system just hangs, doing nothing. The Task manager says that the program is "not responding". It takes about 20 seconds, then performs the task. The edit can be as simple as bolding one cell. It is very frustrating to try to work this way.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Aran

First thing that I would do, would be to go to Help>Detect and Repair...
Repair the application, then go out to MS and get the service packs for XL. You should be up to SP3.
You can find out what service pack you are at by doing a help>about
You may need your install CD, if you deleted the image files when you installed the application. Just be mindful to keep the CD handy, in case it wants it.

Since this seems to be a problem only with large spreadsheets, it may be a lack of RAM that is causing it to slow down.
