My friend has an ME machine he just wanted to use it to surf. Given to him may have had problem he don't know. But it did go on and could surf. So installs AVG, AV + Firewall,PAID version. PC won't boot up proper. Goes to safe/diagnostic mode and then hangs.
He decides to uninstall AVG now it wont go to windows. Decides to format and re-install from OEM restore disks (CD).
It got all the way to install and then stops at 8%.
Somewhere he got a message 2 files are missing

C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS

WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD

I'm fairly sure I can find the files but don't know how he's suppposed to get them into the machine.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?

It is dangerous to answer a question to a mod, but I will attempt to tackle it.
Need some system specs, as you know. Make/ model etc. OEM or not?

VMM32.VXD was once referred to as the gummyball way back when.
It is machine specific and is built during the install of 95, 98 or ME.

Have you booted pure DOS and taken a look at the MSDOS.SYS file yet?

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258471
In the beginning there was the command line.

That about figures doesnt it! LOL!

Think back to the old DOS days
Get a 98 startup disk. www.bootdisk.com and make it.
Assuming ths system has a workable floppy.

MSDOS.SYS is a read only hidden system file in root.
Boot to a 98 startup disk
from the c prompt type
attrib msdos.sys -h -r -s
Use DOS Edit to take a look at it.

I bet it only contains three or four lines.

Windows ME is called the Mistake Edition for a reason, ya know!
Kinda like Vista
In the beginning there was the command line.

Two restore cds is most likely an Emachines or HP
Why are these systems coming back to haunt me?
In the beginning there was the command line.
