Installing Windows Xp On Vista

I just have some questions if anyone can please answer. If I want to install windows xp on vista will I be able to use both individually?Or do I have to partition in order to do that?And if I do partition will I lose all my files on that drive?And is it possible to istall it on a external drive somehow?

You can either run XP in a virtual machine on your Vista system - or you can partition your hard drive in order to install XP on the other partition.
Depending on what and how you partition the drive, you won't necessarily lose data - but this is largely determined by your use of the partition and what partitioning tools you're using.
Yes, it is possible to install XP on an external drive - but it's a pretty complicated process. I started reading up on it and decided not to do it because it was so complicated.

Which do you think is better to do and what do you mean by running xp in a virtual machine?How does that work.Thank you for answering the questions.
By the way the reason I want to do this is because I want to play games that work on xp and not vista.

It's probably not a good idea to run XP in a Virtual Machine if you're playing games - you won't get the performance that you'd like to see. A Virtual Machine is a program that let's you run XP within the Vista operating system.
If you have a good partitioning tool you can resize the partition that Vista is on (and other partitions also) so that you don't lose any data. I can't recommend a free one as I use Acronis Disk Director for this purpose (about $50 US) - but there may be some listed in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic3616.html
As for installing XP after Vista is installed, read this tutorial for more info: http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp
