Hello all,

I have a Toshiba MK1031GAS 4,200 rpm HDD. I have searched high and low for a self-test, diagnostic tool to check health and I have not been able to find anything. Any ideas? There was no mention of Toshiba in the sticky at the top of th forum. I have already run smart scans through BIOS and everything is ok, but I would like a manufacturer specific diagnostic utility if available. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys, while I didn't know about UBCD, I do use HD Tune. Is there a brand specific diagnostic tool put out by Toshiba for my 100GB MK1031GGAS? I have other tools, I just think it would be interesting to compare results.

I did a quick search but couldn't find anything for a toshiba diagnostic tool for their hdds, but I did find a number of instances where others couldn't find one as well, it doesn't look good.

I read on TechSpot that Toshiba do not have a hard drive diagnostic utility. But I read somewhere else that the IBM Drive Fitness Test will work on Toshiba drives.

Well, that would explain why I can't find any. The Toshiba website is fairly difficult to navigate, at least for me, and I thought I was missing something. Finals are coming up and I have several 10+ page papers due in a few weeks ( ), so missing something is a definite possibility!

There aren't any tools available for the Toshiba hard drives - most sites recommend using the Hitachi DFT (Drive Fitness Test) (and so do I). It's free here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/technolo/dft/dftnew.htm

An update:

I emailed Toshiba technical support about this problem. And true to their promise of a response with 24 hours, I received this in my email box:

Israel Mendoza, on 21 November 2007, said:

Hello,

Unfortunately, Toshiba does not provide any hard drive diagnostic utilities.
You will have to go to a third party provider and purchase diagnostic
testing utility software. Ontrack Data Recovery has 'Data Advisor' Software
at www.ontrack.com/dataadvisor/.

Toshiba Technical Support.

He didn't answer my question as to why they don't have one, but the important quandary has been resolved.
