whistling.gif A newbie who looks for some basics that are not in books.

How to copy and paste. How to cut and paste. what I mean is how to set up another page and a step by step approach to do this. I don't know how for example to open another window to paste the item to. And how to split a window.

How to create an avatar.

What free program is good for screenshots (user friendly) and how to go about step by step in doing the shot.

Tips on how to do an effective search on google, though some members may not use it. I purchased the book on the program titled " The missing manual" and it is very good but very intense reading.

How to do the underline in a URL or for that matter just how to do an underline.

As you can see some of these would not be tutorials, just subjects with a short description of how to do these things. Being new I find that many forums seem to take these things for granted and forget that people have to start somewhere. Often times it is like one is talked down to when you ask a question. Too Techie... I find this site to be more user friendly and open to its members. A lot of the others don't want to be bothered with issues at this level and have chiding conversations between moderators regarding ones questions. I find this disrespectful and unprofessional, however that is simply my opinion. When a question of a novice nature is asked, it is a sincere attempt to improve ones level of expertise and effectiveness in using the box.

One other could be steps to go about looking into your registry but not really touch anything as I know this could have a crippling effect. But I am really afraid and don't know how to get into the registry to look at what is there.

How to use the clipboard feature and what it is there for.

Just comments from a Newbie who needs help where books don't work.
Thx. I hope that some of these can be discussed. Thankyou.

I just want to say that I saw a post from someone that suggested the AVG free was slowing down the browser, I think especially firefox. I know it comes highly recommended...but I tried it and found that firefox was running awfully slow. I deleted it and got my speed back. I still have till Nov. 27th until McAfee expires. I think I'm just going to re-up with them.

Just thought I'd share my experience....but, I'm not really very knowledgable about tech stuff.

"What free program is good for screenshots (user friendly) and how to go about step by step in doing the shot."

Hi Georgia. This link will get you started on posting screenshots.

Screenshots

And here is a link to a forum here @ B.C. that is called "Tests and Scribbles" A good place to pratice. smile.gif
Tests and Scribbles

How To Copy and Paste:
Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty box below, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Cut and Paste is the same as above, except you choose 'cut', instead of 'copy'.
Shortcuts
To Highlight: Press 'Ctrl' + 'A'.
To Copy: Highlight an area, as shown above, then hold 'Ctrl' + 'C' (For Mac users 'Apple' + 'C').
To Paste: Click your mouse where you want the text pasted, and then press 'Ctrl' + 'V' (For Mac users 'Apple' + 'S'.

The ability to cut, copy, and paste is found in most programs. Sometimes, the ability to do these tasks via the mouse is disabled, but is still quickly achieved through the use of the shortcuts outlined above.

The reason i ditched Norton Internet Security was because it was so slow.
I have run AVG for a few days now with I.E.It behaves perfectly so does my computer.
I still have Firefox on the back burner maybe i will try it AVG.

smile.gif thaniyou Scarlett for the concise instructions. Now this will likely sound really medieval, if I want to copy and paste something into an e-mail I don't understand how to keep an e-mail that I create "open" and then get to the site that I want to copy and paste from into the e-mail without losing my original e-mail window.
I hope that you can bear with me with such a naive question, however as a novice I have not been able to find such a book that deals with issues like this. Split windows etc. clown2.gif <<---- I guess that is me, I apologize, but hope that you can or another member can help. Thankyou

You are both are so very welcome! smile.gif

~Midevil~ Listen I was not born copying and pasting. laugh.gif We all have to start somewhere. I'm just so glad to help. smile.gif

You can have two browsers open, and go back and forth. Just copy the text from one web page. Then minimize the browser. Then open the other window (browser) where your e-mail is open.

To open two browsers: Open Internet Explorer from the desktop Icon. Sign in to your e-mail. > Compose Messege. Minimize down to the task bar.

Now click on your Internet Explorer Icon again. Go to wherever it is you wish to copy from. Copy desired text. Minimize the present browser to task bar.

Now Maximize the other browser (e-mail) and paste into messege.

Don't worry as long as you do not right click. It will paste in.

Or simply, you can copy the text and then click the back button to where you wish to paste it to (e-mail) etc. Then paste it. wink.gif

smile.gif Thankyou Scarlett, no time tonight to try your most welcome suggestions out however, I plan to. I really appreciate it when obviously a member of expertise takes the time to help one that is reading and blundering and who hopes for the best yet has problems. I will try this tomorrow as it is a little late and the grey matter is starting to look at the clock. I will post as to my success or lack thereof!!!

Many thankyous for taking time out of your day for a dim wit!!!!!!!!!
Thx

So pleased to hear ya tryin' out those techniques, Georgia. If I could only share with you how little I knew when I first got the computer. me , too--> clown2.gif Over a year went by before I learned the first thing about online since I didn't much care for all the spam & popups. Then I found this site & I've been learnin' tips & tricks ever since. (the first n' foremost probably bein' how to eliminate the crud & eye-distractions that incensed me often enough and led to cuttin' short my time online)

and google, my golly, that search engine alone makes up for hours & hours I've spent in & out of librarys and old book stores, used record shops.. you name it. (saves me a bundle in overdue fees, too). There probably isn't a pro who doesn't rely on it & the others, too. It's hard to beat 8 billion items when ya ask for variety. Try adding or subtracting " " marks... and call what you're doing: selecting search parameters, OK?)

Scroll back through the pages here, like Scarlett said... Tests & Scribbles. Then play/practice with us at the General Chat & Games here at the forum. The tip about browser windows is great, too. I'll bet you will get used to minimizing & maximizing them in no time. Your computer shouldn't mind havin' a dozen o' more of 'em sittin' there minimized on your taskbar. That's the sorts thing these PC's want to do. mini/maxi all day long without breakin' sweat. tongue.gif The computer is good medicine for the gray cells, ask me... My hair is nearly all gray as I type this to you, but the gray cells seem to be workin' about up to par (most o' the time, at least) lmfao.gif I'll need somes naps, though... these malware bugs can be the divels!!

When you say using relays do you mean a smart host? Or how to configure relaying? I doubt I would make that a tutorial as its a bit advanced for this crowd, but if you ask this question in the forums I can prob help ya.

Thanks Grinler,

I think I'm asking how to configure relaying, but, in reality, I'm not quite sure.

Here's a link to my question(it's more of a problem definition than a question):

Hi. Lets see if I can explain what I would like to see...

Recently I reformatted my Hard Drive. I can reinstall everything fine and dandy it just takes so much time. What I'd like to do is burn all the programs I want (Firefox, GAIM, Quicktime, Ad-Aware, etc etc) onto a DVD+RW. Then simply by inserting the DVD+RW into the drive, it would simply install all the programs at once (or one after the other). One installer for many programs is what I'm asking for I guess. Or a fast and easy way where you could pop the CD/DVD in and be all set. Maybe a menu that comes up and you check off everything you want to install. For example if I wanted to take this DVD to my parents house and install Ad-Aware and Firefox but they already have GAIM and Quicktime. You know? And when you burn a CD/DVD how do you make it autoplay?

If possible, I would imagine this would be a bit difficult to set up, but I'd like it to be as simple as possible once completed.
