Help....please!!
I have a Sharp XE-A201 cash register which conects to my PC via the COM port. All of a sudden I cannot get a connection between my PC & the COM port! It began a while ago when I had windows XP. I had other PC issues but they all seemed to resolve themselves after upgrading my system to Vista. I have enabled my system to be able to view all devices including hidden ones & it does not show up at all. The thing is when I turn on my PC it 'awakens' the cash register from 'sleep mode' as it were (this hapens when the cash register isn't used for a while), but that's all so I'm thinking there MUST be some kind of info being sent back & forth. I even went as far as getting a new motherboard all to no avail.
Another thing is that my cash register workss fine on my DH's PC! Any suggestions? Oh I also noticed that I no longer have a COM port 2 & the C drive image is all messed up, not sure if these things have anything to do with my huge problem?

I'm just speculating here, but if you don't have a COM port visible under Ports in Device Manager (go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter), it's likely that there's either a problem with the motherboard, or the port wasn't recognized by Windows for some unknown reason (?mobo drivers?).

You can try adding the COM port manually by right clicking on the computer name in Device Manager and selecting "Add legacy hardware"
