Yet, I can load up Dreamweaver and connect to my website using FTP in 1 or 2 seconds. I am at a total loss. I've done a full virus checkout. Nothing. I use a router. But then I used a router 2 days ago...nothing has changed. I've racked my brains...nothing at all has been installed or anything. Guys, I would be so grateful for a lead here. |

I use XP. Once the explorer window is open everything is as normal. But try to open that inital window or an additional window...and back to the crawl...
My PC just takes ages to open any new Explorer window. I can operate within the current window, switch between sites,etc at noramal speed. But close it, and its back to the long start up next time. This post has been edited by agentmulderuk: Feb 18 2005, 12:24 PM |

You're in luck. You can use your System Restore.
Click here for finding it and how to use it. You just select a date in your System Restore point when everything was running perfectly. If that is 2 or 3 days ago and it's one of the restore points in the calendar, feel free to choose it. It's entirely up to you. But, if you have made any changes since that date and today, they will be lost. So, if you haven't done anything recently, select a more recent restore point. Have a look in IE Tools>Internet Options>Connections tab>Lan Settings and make sure there is no check mark in any of the three boxes, but most importantly Automatically detect settings. Having that checked will cause the behaviour you describe.

Tried all above options. Thanks people for trying.
Still does it. Even more strangely, this morning was fine, no problems, but it didn't last. Almost as if something gets 'jammed up' and stays that way for a while. Whatever I think of - faulty cables,router,outlook, IE6, ISP; it doesnt matter as I can ftp instantly whilst the internet is experiencing problems. I am using a router, but the problem has appeared without & without other users being present. Just to top it, I had the same problem about 5 years ago, but with my old PC, which has been replaced 100%. Get Ccleaner and clean all the temp files out of your machine. Thats been known to help. How often do you delete your temporary internet files?

Thanks, downloaded the cleaner. I clear the various temp files quite regularly, especially recently, as I also thought that may be the case of the problem...but its still there.....

Is there anyway I can actually find out what EXACTLY is happening whilst the blur bar crawls across the bottom of the screen. Maybe that will help determine the cause?

The only thing remaining that I can think of right now is to have you download and install HijackThis, which is found in my signature link below. Whatever is going on, it will find it and point it out to the experts. Our staff of experts will view the log and tell you what needs to be done. Please do NOT attempt to fix anything yourself. I would suggest that you open up your Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL). Click the processes tab, and then open up some applications and look at the ones that are using up CPU %. You are more then welcome to post a listing of the Image names here and we can go through them. Please do NOT start ending these processes without knowing what they are!! Some are a part of the system, and ending the wrong ones can freeze up the system.

Phawgg diagnosed a 'parallel task' trojan (ptask.exe)
