I have been trying to fix an old compaq presario computer. Now I have it thinking the hard drive is a:\ and the floppy drive as b:\. I had restore disks the floppy has copied on to the hard drive. The cd is not reading at all now. I know this sounds like a hardware problem. When I boot it up on the a: earlier it has shift+F8 step by step confirmation. Ok I have copied down the step by step confirmation. I just entered at each question not changing a thing. Can someone give me an idea about the step by step confirmation:Shift+F8 Step by step confirmation

I am trying to restore my old computer, which has windows 98 on it or rather it did. Its a compaq presario, I lost the floppy.I went in under the cd and made a floppy. I can read my cd by the way of dos. I got my drive letters straighten back out. I A:\
floppy C:\ hard drive D:\ virtual E:\ cd drive. I have used every F key and ctrl alt del keys and can't get into my bios. When I get F10 to work I get some computer set up jargon. That I can't get it to do anything. I tried fdisk(which I managed to mess up)I can't get my restore cd to work(cause it can't run under dos) I can give you the exe files on it. And maybe a typed up my computer setup. Hope you understand this Cause I don't :flowers:  :trumpet:

model number and serial number of this old compaq, please. I remember a few of them did not use a regular bios, but will be able to do more once I know what I am working with.

compaq presario 5151 serial number 1X89BX35R3NS. I think the serial number is write. My son-in-law and I traded computers along time ago. At on time I had a 4500 series with 95 windows. It went along time ago. Trying to do this one up for my grandkids.

okay, it can handle a max of 384MB of ram. you're trying to install 98 on it correct? the site i posted allows you to make a bootable floppy so that you can fdisk the drive, and format it and load windows.

I never use a resotre cd especially on a old system, since the data it's going to be looking for is long gone. I'd suggest you make and use the floppy form that site, fdisk the drive, reformat it and load windows.

Alot of the exe files won't run due either to "can't run under dos" "need win32 to run" or" need windows to run."
