I am trying to run the start up disk to install a HP Scanjet Scanner, when I click on My computer and the click on the D Driver I get the message "D:\ is not accesible" "The device is not ready" and there is a Retry and Cancel button. Any help would be great as I don't know much about computers

If you right click and choose Manage and then choose Device Manager do you see any yellow or red indicators next to your optical drive? In the square box in front of the drive click inside that, when the specific drive shows there right click on that and choose properties. This page should show the status of the drive, and there should be a tab at the top for Drivers, click on this and check the status of the drivers.

Is this 98? If so the above wont work.
Do any other cd's work?

Check add/remove programs to see if you have Nero InCD installed.
If so, uninstall it and reboot.
In the beginning there was the command line.
