No Sound computer has no sound

a friend has a computer and in the front it has a place to plug in headphones it has windows xp professional operating system. what could be wrong we get no sound when we plug in headphones. the computer allows you to watch dvds and play cds but no good without sound.i think i did the correct search and it shows something like sound blaster what should i do any help would be appriciated. i no nothing a bout computers it was built by another person and given to my friend :thumbsup:

Do you get any sound when the headphones are not plugged in? What I mean is, do you get sound from the speakers but not from the headphones, or no sound at all?
