So I don't know what in the world this is, but I was talking with my friend tonight when this strange voice came over my computer and clearly stated my name. My nickname at that. I thought it was a prank, when I realized that absolutely no one except me uses this computer. This makes me really afraid to use it now! What could be the cause?

WHAT? No! I've heard of some trojans hacking in and causing problems like this, but I just finished cleaning all that other stuff out. Does vista have a fucntion that causes it to say things out loud?

I wonder if you might have turned on one of the usability programs by mistake. I'll bet it was just a fluke.

Hi holytoaster4, what scans have you run? Have you looked in msconfig to see what is running on start up?

Just search your hard drive and your registry for instances of your nickname - that'll show you some of the places on your PC that it could be found. It can also be found from your online activity when logged onto things like AIM, etc

Hi jmu2011,
Did you check out; Control Panel - Ease of Access Center? Just open it and listen to that voice. Is that the voice you heard? If so somewhere & how during set up of your system you would have had to type in your nickname. The only other thing I can think of might be from an IM account, ie. MSN or Yahoo Messengers but I would think you would still get a pop up window. Standard software firewalls don't protect you from IM based attacks. I'm trying to find a Vista compatible program myself because I don't think Zone Labs IMsecure is Vista compatible yet.
