I don't know of any guides, but if you are trying to set up a server, you could try the Uniform Server. It's prepacked with Apache, PHP, MySQL, PERL and phpMyAdmin and comes ready to run. If your lazy like me, this is the way to go.

hmmm does one need a domain name b4 they can even install Apache? cuz i remeber havig it installed on my PC before w/o a domain name at all, now when i try to install it, it asks for a domain name.

No you do not need a domain name to run apache..it will work with IP addresses. When it asks for a name you can use anything, but the most common is localhost.localdomain.
