BleepingComputer.com: Ubuntu Updates

Today there was an update which I've done. It included
updating Firefox to version 2.0.0.8. Doesn't it seem logical
that if that can be done, upgrading to 7.1 couldn't be as easy?
I'm posting this because after the updates, a prompt to upgrade
raised it's ugly head again and I almost went for it....just reading
what you folks are talking about in this regard is really eye-opening,
and I enjoy and get much info.
Any of you Administrators can yank this post if you feel it's not
of any use...I just thought it was great that the Firefox update was
there and went so easily with me just sitting there watching..

There are 3 ways to update from 7.04 to 7.10.

1)Through Update Manager. (That Prompt you received) works as long as the server doesn't go out on you

2)Through the Alternate Desktop CD (burn it, reload it into the drive and it should Auto-Run itself. Basic principle is the same as Method 1 but with the CD as the upgrade repository so no server's involved)

3)Through the Alternate Desktop CD (burn it, reboot PC and select Upgrade) Works like Fedora or Windows Upgrades.

My preferred methods are 2 and 3 as, if it brakes your system you can install fresh over top of the old, since you have an install CD sitting there with you.



If you've use 7.04 w/ beryl 7.10 is the same only so far it is more stable (not that 7.04 wasnt, but CompizFusion is more stable then beryl)

Thanks BlackSpyder, I'm now using a CD I burned (7.10), I may fool around
with it a bit before installing it permanently on the hard drive. I have a lot of
music etc. that I would really like to hold on to for a bit.
As a "Live session user" is there something I should be looking for that
stands out as being better than the 7.04?

I had used the "burner" used by Ubuntu for music but today was the first
time I used it for data (burning 7.10) I think it's excellent and very fast.
I keep finding lots of great things using Ubuntu.

Note: The number 2 and 3 upgrade options only work with the "Alternate Desktop CD". not the "Live CD". it appears as though the Live Cd takes up too much space to include all the require upgrade files.

When I finally decide to upgrade, I was going to allow it to write over
what I now have and give it permission to use the entire harddrive. (that
is the way I have 7.04 now)

I'm a bit confused about the CD....After booting up it has the option
to do an install on the desktop.

It looks pretty much like the desktop did when I used the CD to
install 7.04.

The Live CD's are virtually the same. This is due to the limited amount for space available on a CD (Fit Full Kernel+ Full Desktop+Wordprocessor+ Install utilities and files and the disk is over 1/2 full already)

7.10 Review-This is a good look at the changes from 7.04 to 7.10.

Thanks for the info....I haven't upgraded yet, but I will.
As an aside, The Evolution mail would be the same as
my Outlook Express info, correct? If that's true, I will have
access to it from either computer? I don't want to transfer
it from one to another, but want to use it on either computer.

I also use, 95% of the time, my Yahoo address, so I've been
igoring setting up Evolution.

Evolution settings are the same as Outlook settings. Just make sure that your setup so that way when you download a file it doesnt remove it from the server so you can access it from another computer (whenever you get the mail on that computer).

I believe you will have to use "Ypop" to access Yahoo mail via POP3 clients (not really sure I dont have yahoo mail)

Thanks again....Firefox browser has an add-on that shows an envelope
in the bottom right of screen...it flashes etc. when I get mail via Yahoo.
