I guess I'm wondering what WD software you are running and why.
When I install a new drive, I just attach it and format/create a partition for the O/S...and let the O/S install.
And I make sure that I change the BIOS boot options from IDE-0 to CD/DVD so that I can boot from the optical drive.
Question: Does the BIOS recognize the drive as being installed? Are drive parameters accurately reflected in the BIOS?

the hdd does show in the bios, I thought I had to run the software that came w/hdd. when I set the hdd as primary master, and boot w/ WINDOWS VISTA, it says invalid sys disk

Hi, Tinpan.
I was installing a Western Digital Caviar SE hard drive tonight and I saw the exact same problem. I have the vpr-matrix 2020 and the hard drive crashed. I spent hours mucking around with the BIOS and looking online for a BIOS flash update. The problem is that Intel doesn't support that motherboard anymore.
Finally, I took a closer look at the manual for the hard drive and it said "Alternate Setup Instructions for Windows 2000/XP." The instructions are "Boot to the Windows 2000/XP Installation CD". So that's all I had to do. Actually, I inserted the vpr-matrix system restore CD and the installation succeeded. I wish I tried that hours ago.
Hopefully this post will be useful to anyone else who has this problem in the future.
