With Ubuntu on my hard drive, I can play some CD's,
but not all I have....I've tried them on a Windows based
computer and they're ok. Any thoughts? These are not
copies, they're right off the sellers shelves.

Try using Automatix to get additional codecs:

sudo apt-get install automatix2

Thanks, before I did what you suggested, I put in one of the CD's
that wouldn't play and kept inserting and ejecting it and finally
up jumped "juicer" and it's working...could be the CD ROM is going
bad. I don't know, but it's working and thanks again for the suggestion.

Most likely the drive lens is dirty. Clean it and it should work better. The CD Codec is automatically installed with Ubuntu. DVD, MP3, and other propritary file types are not included for some reason. (I still dont understand it.)

BTW when did they put Automatix2 in the repos? I missed that one big time.

Yes, it needed cleaning and all is right with the world.
I may go for another burning program other than
Serpentine though...I see there are others out there.

Automatix.

For burning Brassero (available through either Automatix or apt-get/synaptic) mimics the late model Nero with the a screen of disc creation options before opening the main window. GnomeBaker (available through the same resources as Brassero) is closer to the older Nero style. I use both (depending on my mood). Serpentine is a one trick pony which doesnt really support my needs.
