When I attempt to create the Hosts File Backup [recommended after cleaning my computer - a success thanks to bleepingcomputer] it tells me 'no host files detected'. What are host files and is it reasonable that none would be detected?

If this is not the right place for this question please let me know.

A Hosts file maps an IP address to a name. The original purpose of hosts files was to map the proper address to a site's name but now its also used for blocking purposes. The "blocking effect" of a host file is not in the name being listed there, but rather by associating the name with the wrong IP address which prevents you from reaching that site.

The HOSTS file is a non-extension file found in these default locations:
Windows Vista -> C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows XP -> C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows 2K -> C:\WInnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows 98 -> C:\Windows\hosts
Windoes ME -> C:\Windows\hosts

These files are normally located in the etc folder:
hosts - 1KB <- does not have a file extension
lmhosts.sam - 4 KB
networks - 1 KB
protocol - 1 KB
services - 1 KB

An example HOSTS file is shown here.

To view the folder containing the Hosts file, go to Start > Run and type: %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\

To view the Hosts file, go to Start > Run and type: notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
