Hello BC!

I am beginning to gain interest in making homebuilt computers, but I need to know how one would make a recovery CD, like the ones shipped with name brand PCs, to restore the computer to its original state. Any assistance? Thanks!

With a home-built computer you'll have to use a disk cloning utility or a disk imaging utility to make a copy of the disk - it can take up to 4 DVD's to make a full image (depending on what you've installed).

You can also use the Windows Backup and Restore utility in Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate versions.

I use Acronis. I have MS restore turned off. After my orinal install of vista, both 64 and 32 bit, I activated both and made a raw image of each. I then customised and dittoed. I then installed all my regular software, customised each item and, again imaged the lot. These images are stored safely. If and when I have a problem, I just revert back to whichever image might be appropriate. Laborious? Yes. It took a while but, for the end result (it takes about 25 minutes to rstore the image, including the MBR/Boot sec) and I am back on my desktop again.
