Help
This is a follow-up to "The State of Linux" post that I brought about a month or more back. I chose the distro based on what I know about them. The Software package was tough because there are so many widely available for any task you can imagine. I chose some of those as popular as possible each within their own market. Notice that the Free software question is multiple, however, please try to limit your responses to one package that you feel has come a long way in some manner. IE Useabliltiy, function, or feature.
When posting to other on either question please state the reason for which you chose that Distro/Package.
I'll be looking forward to your responses.
PS please don't forget about Dreamlinux which almost made it to the main choices.

PCLinuxOS (2007), Have tried a number of others and like it the best , Has done everything I want it to so far, no complaints
have used Firefox since 0.7, first under M$ , now Linux, use 3 extensions and one theme (Black Japan Max)

I was interrupted after voting. So I'll place my remarks now. Ubuntu (Studio) is my current favorite distro. Fedora is a programmers/developers distro but serves many useful purposes and i use it regularly because I like the feel of it. I couldnt pick a package so i went with the 3 ones i use on Windows and Linux (FireFox, GIMP, and Oo.org)

Hi
My choice OpenSuSe. This is a user friendly distro. Little problem, is to long to boot, but this problems are solved in last version 10.3. I have 2 distros installed, OpenSuse and a Debian minimal net install, with only the strict necessary. But for normal using i like OSS.

OK so I said OpenSuse because of the current features in 10.3 and Ubuntu comes a close 2nd with PCLinuxOS 3rd.
Compiz Fusion has come quite a way along with OO.org which is keeping up with M$ Office and should soon add support for One Note if it doesn't already

I like OpenSuSE. Being very much a novice with Linux, SuSe10.3 takes care of my needs until I can get comfortable.

As the Russian's have just agreed to use Mandriva for all their govermental infrastructure, I have just downloaded the 2008 LiveCD version and it looks good, feels stable.
It does have a functional feel about it (with KDE as standard), but I am investigating getting it running with an Orange Livebox.
OpenOffice has saved my bacon a number of times as the amount of times presentations would fire up correctly in PowerPoint...
FireFox has becom so ubiquitous, though I do also use Opera.

I'm actually rather flattered that you would consider BC a favorite resource for Linux. We only have a few people that help out there (granted, they are very helpful and knowledgeable)

i am currently not using a linux distro on the main computer because i still need some applications that solely work on windows. however, when i do use linux, which is either on my secondary pc or through a live cd, i use debian on the 2nd pc and a live cd of kanotix or sidux.
