I did the install from http://www.howtoforge.com/avg_antivirus_ubuntu_feisty. I went great. But when I click to Update it tells me I don't have permission to exectue avgupdate..

to scan the whole file system as superuser:
open a terminal
as root:
to update as superuser (this will be enough):
open terminal
open a terminal
sudo avgscan /
as root:
gksu avgscan /
to update as superuser (this will be enough):
open terminal
sudo avgupdate -o

That's very cool stuff. I wonder if the command line scans and update run faster without the GUI overhead.

Much faster. Without having to dedicate resources tot he front end, it is left to dedicate a majority of the system to just do it's job. In Linux, it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes anyways, with or without the front end.
