It was reported this morning on my local news broadcast (which prefers to broadcast such drivel rather than actual "news" ) that the textual emoticon, or "smiley", turns 25 today.

Scott E. Fahlman is said to have created it on September 19, 1982.

The original smiley was composed of a colon, a dash, and a right parenthesis. Or:

:-)

He also introduced the smiley's evil brother, the frownie, the same day:
:-(

So, happy birthday :-)
