Hi, my grandma's computer has been freezing up after inactivity, as well as making alot of noise. She now just leaves it off after using it because of its freezing up. Right now it's making a dit dit dit dit dit dit noise, (to be so specific). I read somewhere that the only things that would make noise are the fan or the hdd, and am wondering if it neccesarily has to be the hard drive, because of the freeze up, or if that's not even the issue at all. It's most likely my fault, for one day when it wasn't working correctly I sort of kicked it, which was very stupid and idiotic of me. I know. I think we're going to have to get someone to look at it though. If you have any ideas of what I could do I would appreciate it.

Thanks very much,

Sounds like the Hard Disk Drive is failing.
I recommend you back up any important files now.
Try going to the HDD manufacturer's site and down load and run their diagnostic utility.

I was nosing around in the hdd properties and noticed this little number: "Enable Write Caching on the disk", it is checked. I'm thinking maybe it shouldn't be. Could I be right?

I wouldn't suggest messing with it - no telling what it'll do if the hard drive is failing. Open up the side of the case and see if you can locate the source of the noise (without touching anything inside the case).

Theres two scenarios I can imagine 1. something is interfering with the operation of a fan and causing the computer to overheat and freeze up or 2. Your HDD has the click of Death and its going to die very soon you should get everything of importance off the drive while you can and replace the it.
