BleepingComputer.com: Installed Vista --> Have No Audio

i just installed vista on my laptop, i had winXP before. but now i notice that i don't have any audio. i tried downloading a bunch of drivers but they didnt work so i uninstalled them. i talked to Gateway and they said that i need a chipset driver and i should go to www.intel.com to download one. problem is that i don't know which driver i need? how can i figure this out?? someone help plzzz! thanx

Have you tried Intel's chipset identifier program?

there's no choice for windows vista

and when i click on "All Operating Systems" there aren't any compatible with vista

Hmm thats not so helpful. As it was just released in August '07, I'm surporised there isnt a Vista version available.
You could try downloading the XP version of the Identification Utility and running it in compatibility mode. You may want to set a restore point first.
Once you find out what the particular chipset you have, hopefully finding the actual Intel drivers wont be as difficult!

It looks like your next step is to install the Intel Chipset Installation Utility. I see that there is an option for Vista for this.

After following Gateway support's advice by succesfully installing the chipset drivers but you still do not have any audio, I would definitely let them know. I am surprised that Gateway doesnt have their own drivers for downloading.

Sorry in advance for the menial questions, and I realize that you are saying the reason for the problem is because of the OS upgrade, but its still important to check the following:
Can you confirm that all cables are plugged in correctly and if your speakers run with batteries that the batteries are fully charged? Speaker volume on?
Are you using onboard sound or a sound card?
Is there a speaker icon in the system tray? When you click it once, then click mixer, what do you see?
