All I need is a program that will let me take clips from other AVIs or any movie files really, and just pile them on top of each other. I dont need any effects, nothing fancy, just something that will let me put a series of clips into a format that I can then burn onto a DVD.
I downloaded windows movie maker and installed it, but when I open it, it first gives me "The collections file is not valid or is corrupted. A new collections file has been created" then "Class not registered" pops up over that. Then when I close both it says "A new collections file cannot be created" and then I get "Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
My first reaction was to try uninstalling it and then installing it again, but I cant even find it on the list of add/remove programs so I'm stuck.

I've used this free program DVD-Shrink to remove parts of a film, works great.

Seems like it would be what I'm looking for, but unless I am mistaken, it doesnt seem to recognize anything that isnt a DVD, and a large part of what I want to take clips from are just avi files. Thanks though.

Hi Azshmo,
The following from Microsoft might help:
"Windows Movie Maker 2.1 FAQ" -- see the "Troubleshooting Movie Maker 2.1" section:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/m...ker/21/faq.mspx
That same article contains a section with links to other Web sites containing more information about Movie Maker, including troubleshooting tips.

Azshmo,
I also found the following here at Bleeping Computer:
Bleeping Computer Applications and Guides > Mini guides and how-tos - Simple answers to common questions > Audio and Video:
"Converting Video Files And Burning To Dvd":
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...st&p=609037
The "DVD Flick" mentioned there may be an alternative for you if you are having too many problems using Movie Maker.
