Can't Complete Pc Backup

Need help!!! I am trying to perform complete PC backup on DVDs. My OS is Windows Vista Ultimate. At start of back up it indicates that I will need 2-4 dvd discs to complete the backup. At the halfway thru the back up process in the status bar, I get a msg saying to insert more than 1-gb dvd disc into the computer, but the first disc does not eject from the computer. Only way to eject the first disc is to cancel the back up process. Any suggestions?

What program are u using? Vista's built in one, or a external one?
