BleepingComputer.com: Vista Home Basic Updates Make Internet Very Slow

One of my computers runs Vista Home Basic. For convenience, I had it set to automatically run Windows Update. I've got cable Internet connection.

A few weeks ago, I started to get VERY SLOW response time on the web on this computer. My older computer runs XP, and wasn't effected. I use both Firefox and IE. I'd click on a link to a website, and wait 30seconds to 1 minute or more for the site to come up. All the non-internet applications I use seemed to work properly.

I reloaded software, defragged, swapped out memory (I have 1gb RAM), swapped network connections (both computers are hard wired to the Internet through a router), etc. to no avail.

Then, I decided to do a System Restore to a restore point from about 2 weeks earlier. VOILA! Worked fine. However, I didn't turn off the automatic Windows Update. As soon as it updated, I had the same problem, so I re-restored and turned off Automatic Updates.

Anybody else have this problem? Have any idea which of the many updates may be giving me the problem? I don't mind doing updates manually, but I really don't want to go thru the process of loading the updates one-by-one to determine which one is giving me the problem. That would take like forever. Whether I do the updates automatically or manually doesn't matter to me, but I do want to keep the operating system updated.

If you can single out which particular update causes this, we may be able to figure out how to "fix" it. I'd suspect it's an update that doesn't play well with your drivers - and an update of the driver may fix it.

There were a lot of fixes released during that period. I'm asking if anyone has a clue as to which update may be causing the problem, so I don't have to install them one at a time, test to see if if it works OK, go to the next update, etc. If I can identify the problem update, I can install all the others and just omit that one.

my grandpas computer is having the same kind of problem but i don't know what update to un-install and he has had the problem for a very long time.

i always tell people to turn off auto-update and manually do the security up-dates only... but some people don't listen.. like my grandpa.

if you could at least tell me what up-dates installed?... or find out what one it is that would be very helpful.
