BleepingComputer.com: Imgkulot, So Annoying!need Assistance!

okay, i've got kaspersky internet security7.0 which did a great job on my computer..
the thing is, my cousin inserted her flashdrive, and my computer got infected. i used kaspersky ang got rid of lots of viruses.

the problem that's bothering me, is, that even though kaspersky says it has gotten rid of imgkulot.bat etc... i can't seem to open my hard drive via double click.. i try to right click on it, but.. it says..

open (imgkulot)
explore (imgkulot)

its so annoying! i thought my antivirus has been able to rid my system of it.. i even used spybot-search and destroy, which this site suggested, and it worked wonders for me, but i can't get my finger on why i can't have access on my hard drives..
oh, it also says,

(upon doubleclicking the icon)
window script host
cannot find script file

i mean, what does that mean? that there's still a virus or something? i really am worried, i'm a paranoid android, and i wouldn't wanna have to go through reformatting my computer again, it'll be a nightmare times 10!

From what you describe, it appears to be a flash drive infection.

Flash drive infections usually involve malware that loads an autorun.inf file into the root folder of all drives (internal, external, removable) and automatically executes a malicious autorun.bat file which calls wscript.exe to run autorun.vbs on your computer. When a flash drive becomes infected, the Trojan will infect a system when the flash drive is inserted if autorun has not been disabled.

There is a specialized fix tool for most of these infections but imgkulot.vbs is newer and that tool probably won't work as I did not see it added to the list of covered infections.

Please read and follow all instructions in the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". You may have performed some of these steps already. If you can't perform a step, then skip and continue with the next. In step #9 there are instructions for downloading HijackThis and creating a log. (This is a self-extracting version which will automatically install HJT in the proper location.)

When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Analysis Forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. Please include the top portion of the HijackThis log that lists version information. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team.

Then don't start a new topic in the Hijackthis forum. Signs of these infections are not always readily visibile in a hijackthis log. They are more often recognized by users describing sysmptoms such as:

• Cannot open drives/partitions.
• Double Click DOES NOT Open Drives.
• "Open with" dialog box pop up when double-clicking on drives.
• Error messages like: "Windows Script Host Cannot find script /autorun.vbs"

In your case did you provide any information that double-clicking the hard drive was not working or say anything about the context menu text with imgkulot next to open and explore? If not, you can do that in your existing topic.

i was already able to fix that imgkulot thing.. it was an autorun.vbs problem and a friend told me to go to cmd..
then i typed del c:\autorun.* /f/s/q/a
it solved the problems! thanks for your help though! i'll continue to support this site and the people making the site valuable!!

Keeping Autorun enabled on USB and other removable drives has become a security risk due to the increasing number of malware variants that can infect them and transfer the infection to your computer. When the removable media is inserted, autorun looks for autorun.inf which automatically can run a malicious file that you do not expect or intend to run. Read Danger USB! Worm targets removable memory sticks.

I recommend disabling the Autorun feature on USB drives as a method of prevention.

The easiest way to disable Autorun on a specific drive is to download and use Tweak UI PowerToy.

• After installation, launch Tweak UI, double-click on My Computer in the tree menu on the left, then click on AutoPlay > Drives. This will allow you to change the system settings for AutoPlay/autorun.
  
• Uncheck the drives you want to disable AutoPlay on and click on Apply.
  
• Next, click on the Types in the left tree. This allows you to control whether Autoplay is enabled for CD and DVD drives and removable drives. You may need to restart Tweak UI if it closes after step 2.
  
• Uncheck the box to disable Autoplay for a particular type of drive.
  
• Click Apply.

When Autorun is disabled, double-clicking a drive which has autorun.inf in its root directory may still activate Autorun so be careful.

Another prevention measure you can use is to download Symantec's "NoScript" utility from this page. Scroll down to the section "How to disable (or re-enable) the Windows Scripting Host" to find the link and follow the instructions. Doing this will prevent VBScripts from running on your machine until you run the utility again.

that was very informative! i have been looking for a way to disable the autoplay, now i followed your suggestion, and its working great! that's some nice info there! thanks! this will keep my removable drives from infecting me, nice!
