I've taken over a job where I'm managing 2-domains and 6-web applications with little web server or development server management.

My dev server that I'm setting up has a private IP address (192.x.x.x) and I want internal folks to do some testing as we develop. It seems to me that the HOST file (WinXP) is the proper place to setup so they can use IE to view the dev site, but it isn't working.

I'll probably have to go to a static IP address because now our customer is saying we'll have outside testers.

I was setting up the HOST as:

192.x.x.100 devsite

in hopes that the users could type in http://devsite/app1 into their IE address field and then get the dev site loaded.

Am I missing something?

Thanks,
- Scott

Try having them use the direct IP to connect to the app; ie 192.168.0.1/app1. That will work if they are on the same network. If you are having outside testers, you will need a publicly accessible machine. You don't necessarily need a static IP address because there are applications that will update your IP address on the Domain Name Servers. You do need a ISP that will allow you to do web hosting though.

Hey Groovicus,

When I try 192.168.0.100/app1 from another system on the network I receive "We did not find any results for 192.168.0.100/APP1/". Do I need to setup "web sharing"?
