Which? old laptop

Alright so basically i found an old TOSHIBA protege 3440ct.

I'd like to install linux on it but not sure where to begin.

Pentium 3 processor
64 mb ram
6 gig hard drive
no cd drives, but i have a usb thumb drive.. problem is.. its only 1 gigabyte, so something small.

I'd like to be able to browse the internet, IM, word process, youtube, and all that basic stuff. the operating system has to be light on resources also.

Thanks, and i'm a noob when it comes to linux.

Try Puppy Linux. You will need to boot from a floppy that has USB support. If not it will not read the flash drive.


Puppy is 40 to 100mb. Depending on the version.

Fluxbuntu is supposed to be really light (ISO weighs in at 308MB) http://fluxbuntu.org/?q=node/3 (to make the screenshots and downloads work copy and paste to browser bar, It'll take you to a file index)
DamnSmallLinux is also really light http://damnsmalllinux.org/
and so is Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1

Well, im trying to install DSL right now.

The problem is, there isnt an option to boot with the usb drive. anyways i can install it?

I read ur first post and I was going to mention Damn Small Linux and ask you if you knew your motherboard supported booting form USB. Who is the maker of your BIOS and what version do you have? You may be in luck if you can update your BIOS. Can you buy/borrow an external USB CD-ROM drive?

No it doesn't actually.

It's really lightweight and small. Doesn't even have touch pad, but a track wheel. I'm not sure how i would check the BIOS and update it. The laptop is a Toshiba Portege 3440CT , if that helps.

According to this it should boot off of USB, it may just be disabled. To enter your BIOS try F2, Delete, and F10

Alright, so i enabled USB-FDD emulation, but it still leads me to the windows OS. I cahnged the boot order to FDD, cdrom, lan, hdd
