I have a Windows XP w/IE7, media center edition, Dell, which came with McAfee Security Center 7.2 on it. It has expired and is not updated, although still on.

I want to eliminate McAfee and go to free programs. I'm thinking Avast for AV and I don't know which firewall to use yet.

I have Spybot, Adaware SE, and Super Antispyware.

How do I remove McAfee? Should I load the AV and firewalls, before or after removing McAfee? Any other suggestions? I am not very technical.

Thanks,

McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool removes all 2005, 2006, 2007 versions of McAfee consumer products.

Download your replacement AV and firewall first, disconnect from the net and then remove McAfee. When done, install your replacements, connect to the net and check for updates.

Thanks Quietman!

I'll proceed as you suggest. Any recommendations for a firewall? Thanks, again.

Free firewalls:
Zone Alarm Free for Personal Use
Outpost Firewall Free
Jetico Personal Free
Sygate Personal Firewall Free 5.6
Comodo Free Firewall
Kerio Personal Firewall (available in a full and limited free edition)
Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 (last freeware version that was strictly a firewall and not bundled with extra features that hog resources and slow down system performance) - Alternate download (scroll down)
