Free Antivirus programs: (choose and install only one)
AVG Anti-Virus Free - AVG Anti-Virus Free User Manual
Avast - How to Install, Configure, and Use
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

Independent comparatives of Anti-virus Software
click on the "Comparatives" link on the left
Comparison of Anti-virus Scanners

Of course these types of comparative results will vary depending on who is doing the comparison testing, what they are testing for, what versions of anti-virus software is beging tested, etc.

AVG is good, however if you're willing to pay there are more effective alternatives.

AntiVirus only: Kaspersky
Internet Security Suite: ZoneAlarm or PC-Cillin if you're using Vista.

One of the problems with comparison testing is that there are no defined list of standards, each test will provide different results.

Hi waterraven2,
I had esset NOD32 (years subscription) running since i got my machine a little over a year ago,
when it started playing up a few weeks ago NOD picked up a trojan on start up,
after a full scan no more !!
a friend recomended kapersky and it has a free thirty day trial for the full internet security suite,
installed and ran it, to my horror 96 trojans !!!!!!!

and this was after scanning with a lot of the free spy/malware stuff
i will definately be taking out a years subscription with kapersky !!!!
it seems to me that the free stuff just doesn't pick up as much.
hope this helps
regards Febman.
