In the cases of more expensive computers, yeah, that's pretty correct that a custom build is cheaper. But, as the computer gets cheaper and the price margin between custom and prebuilt begins to close, prebuilts usually meet the price due to added things you get with a prebuilt like a monitor and an OS. RAM is probably the place you will save most money upgrading yourself. Case-in-point alienware sells 4GB of RAM on their computers for $900, but it really would cost $240 on newegg.

Just for future reference in respect to this. We have a sixteen year old and although I have yet to follow up on it We have thought about securing her some type of prepaid card she can carry with her to malls and the like. Here is a link to a Visa reloadable Card which is the one I was going to do some investigating on. I can't vouch for it, but it may be something worth looking at for you and your grandparents. In fact if is indeed a valid way to do business through the internet I will probably get one for my fiancee and myself. Although I got it corrected I have been hit one time with a bogus charge from a shyster outfit.
You can use it on the internet from what I understand, but even if someone filched the number they could get no more than the limit of the card.Visa Reloadable
