I am using a Dell Inspiron 6400 with SONY DVD+-RW DWQ58A Drive. I have UDS2 firmware installed, and I'm trying to burn using DVD Decrypter, PowerISO, and ImgBurn. None of them are working, and I get the following error message:
I/O Error!
Devive:[1:0:0]SONY DVD+-RW DWQ58A UDS (D:) (ATA)

I've tried looking for updates with ImgBurn, and DVDDecrypter, and nothing. Is this a firmware dealie? I am using Memorex DVD-R 16x recordable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Most answers I've searched for say to update the burning software. I see you've tried different programs, so it could possibly be a bad batch of disks. Another recommendation is to clean the drive's lens. Easiest way to do that would be to purchase one of those lens cleaning CD's. It has a tiny brush on it that spins and cleans the lens

Congratulations you are way ahead of almost everyone I have ever helped with this problem, not big on laptop dvd burners, but you seem to be pretty adept.
First your firmware is out of date, dell's newest is UDS2
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2113
download but don't update yet, remember to do it in safe mode
now let's use imgburn to troubleshoot, when you stick a blank in does it list the write speeds in the righthand window?
btw memorex is crap, expect some failures with all but the best burners
I use a lot of verbatim as they are often on sale
if the write speeds are shown then it's probably not a firmware issue
you can use the tools/filterloadorder
to see what's running that might be hosing your bus
these are the safe native xp filters
