Bootlegged Dvds How to tell?

I picked up some animé DVD's from the local Flea Market Saturday. The girlfriend says they are bootlegs since they are purple backed disks (she used to work at a video game store that took in trades). I say that they are re-coded Japanese DVDs (as is common with odd-ball animé DVD's) since the packaging is in Kenji(?, proper name for Japanese writing) and the packaging is different then the other DVD I bought from this series that was distributed through a different distributer (Bandi), the menu's work, and all extra features work perfectly. How do you tell??
